Chinese medicine evolved over a period of 5000 years. In addition to its remarkable longevity Chinese medicine is the only continuously documented medical system that we know of. This offers us a window into millennia of humankind's quest to relieve human suffering through medical intervention. What is unique in Chinese medicine is its approach to healing the human body. This involves viewing the body as a complete energy system that is affected by both its inner and outer environment. The outer environment could be a damp rice paddy field, a city street or a mountain lodge; the inner environment could be an anxiety ridden corporate attorney or air traffic controller, a mother or father of six, or a Buddhist monk meditating most of the day. What the Chinese doctors recognized is that the body and its outer environment are in a constant state of change and that change represents the body/minds attempt to maintain balance in a constantly changing world.
Ideally, we sleep or rest when we are tired, eat when we are hungry and ask for help when we need emotional support. But we do not live in an ideal world. When the body becomes so overwhelmed by its inner and/or outer environment that it can no longer "fix" itself, then it needs outside help to coax the healing process along. I view my role as a helper to the healer within. My efforts as a practitioner of Chinese medicine involve assisting the body in discovering where the imbalance is and gently work together to bring it back to a balanced state. This imbalance may manifest as a migraine headache, knee or back pain, night sweats, or depression. In order to facilitate this process I work with my patients to look at both the imbalance and the big picture. This helps us to get at the root of the disorder while correcting it in real time.
At the Concord Clinical Health Center we believe that an integrative approach to healing is the best remedy for the patient. A multi-disciplinary center gives the patient access to expert opinions not often available in today's healthcare environment.
