What is chiropractic?
Developed in Iowa by Daniel David Palmer, chiropractic is based upon the belief that the human body has the ability to heal itself. There is a vital force, or innate, which flows through the body via the nervous system. Anything which interferes with the normal transmission or expression of this force can result in dysfunction or disease. Chief among the factors causing altered nerve expression is spinal subluxation – an alteration in normal segmental motion of the spine. Chiropractors are trained in specific techniques to detect and correct subluxations – resulting in restored spinal kinematics and normalized nerve transmission.
What techniques do you use at The Concord Clinical Health Center?
Our chiropractors utilize diversified, full spine, manual manipulation as a primary adjusting modality. This specific technique involves the delivery of a high velocity, short amplitude dynamic thrust delivered to a joint to restore normal motion. Extremity adjusting techniques are also used, when indicated, along with physiotherapy. Patients are generally placed on a home based stretching and exercise program to support the gains made during an office visit.
How long do the visits last?
The initial intake session, which requires a case history, review of systems, physical examination and report of findings typically takes 45-60 minutes. Follow up treatment sessions take 15-20 minutes on average.
How long will it take before I feel better?
Every case is different, so there is no simple answer to this question. We suggest an initial trial of 3-4 sessions of active therapy. After that period, the case is reassessed for improvement, and response to care. The decision to continue with treatment or to discharge a patient from care is always left to the patient. Our goal is to address the underlying cause of complaints, rather than just treat the symptoms of a particular condition.
Can I still see my medical doctor while receiving treatment?
We at the Center feel very strongly the most effective approach to patient care involves an integration of the best practices available. We encourage you to discuss with your physician your desire to try chiropractic, although in most cases, a specific referral is not required. We will send your doctor, with your consent, a report of findings, and plan of care. In some cases it may be necessary to coordinate imaging studies, prescription medications, and laboratory testing through your primary care physician's office. We are happy to be a member of your health care team, assisting you in achieving your desired goals.
